Golly History - James Robertson ©
It was before the first world war when one of James Robertson's sons was visiting the Backwoods of North America, when he discovered the Golly. He was inspired by  children playing with black rag dolls with white eyes and decided that it should become the emblem/mascot of the Robertson's company. The first badge to be produced was the Jolly Golly Golfer in 1928.

In 1932 six Golly fruit badges were introduced, produced by H.W.Miller of Birmingham. Each fruit brooch incorporated the pop eyed golly on the fruit. The brooch was mounted on a cardboard saying the famous words "The Worlds Best Marmalade" Only three outside wrapper were required to obtain the fruit badge.

In 1939 during the War no gollies were made and all the original moulds were destroyed, this was due to the shortage of metal. It was not until 1946 that gollies were re-launched. Demands became so high that H.W.Miller could not cope  with the manufacturing as some many brooches, were required, so Fattorini & Sons were asked to help.

In 1956 the designe of all Gollies changed from the "pop eyes" and the Golden Shred  was removed from waistcoat. The new designed golly had eyes looking to the left, his legs where straighten and the golly was given a wider smile.
